Profile: Hans de Zwart

The keynote for the Bitcoin Wednesday conference on 5 August 2015 will be given by none other than the Executive Director of the Dutch digital civil rights organisation Bits of Freedom, Hans de Zwart.

In his talk Hans de Zwart will explore possible links between Bitcoin and current Dutch digital rights issues like the newly proposed bill on the secret services, the hacking proposal for the Dutch police, copyright enforcement, data retention or net neutrality. He will also touch on whether the blockchain can help us to create distributed serverless websites making it harder for governments to stop freedom of expression.

At Bits of Freedom, Hans is dedicated to defending digital freedom on the Internet in The Netherlands, including the right to free communication and privacy.  Before coming to work for Bits of Freedom he was Shell’s Senior Innovation Adviser for Global HR and Learning Technologies, and before that, a Moodle consultant for Stoas learning.  At the start of his career he was a physical education teacher at a high school in Amsterdam.

Hans believes in the power of design and the importance of civil rights, particularly where it meets the intersection between technology and society.  He is also interested in philosophy, free software, innovation and learning.
