Food Supply Chain

Leontien Hasselman-Plugge, the CEO of SIM Supply Chain, talks about her organization’s role in bridging the distance between food producers and consumers during Bitcoin Wednesday’s conference on energy, sustainability and social impact held on 2 October 2019.  For the past 10 years, SIM has worked in this area and has carefully mapped 200,000 supply chains.  Two years ago they began experimenting with blockchain technology to enhance the traceability and provenance for some products, allowing us to better identify the various players who make, grow and farm our food.

In this talk, Leontien shows what SIM has done:

• How SIM helped improve social working conditions at the farms and factories where Brazilian orange juice is produced;
• How SIM tracks every egg sold at Albert Heijn supermarkets and helped educate consumers about animal welfare;
• How SIM can precisely trace bananas coming from Colombia to ensure they are climate-neutral.
